When Dana White announced he was considering a fight between MMA stars Anderson Silva and George St. Pierre, most people were on the edge of their seats. The best of the best going toe to toe, battling it out to see who is the best in the world. The only problem is it may not be as good as it appears.
A previous article discussed why the fight could be a disappointment. Instead, let’s discuss the opportunities that are presenting themselves currently. A fight between Anderson Silva and Jon Jones would make more sense than Anderson Silva fighting George St. Pierre for a good amount of reasons.
First, Anderson Silva has fought and won at 205lbs. It has been reported that he walks around well over 200lbs when he is not cutting for a fight. Jon Jones would obviously be comfortable fighting at 205 as well since he is in fact the Light Heavyweight champion. George St. Pierre, on the other hand, would be at a disadvantage fighting at a catch weight against Silva. What would we really learn if Silva beats GSP at a catch weight? Excuses would be made instantly that he was at a disadvantage.
It will be interesting to see what is decided. Everyone wants the “Superfight” of GSP and Silva, but it may not be the best choice. Either way, George St. Pierre will have to get through Jake Shields before Dana White even considers putting the match together. While Jon Jones and George St. Pierre would both make great opponents, Jones may be the better fit.
